Interesting article on the self-assessment of sustainability in the fisheries sector

5.12.2016

Not long ago a very interesting article was published on Nofima's web site. The article was about a new standard for self-assessment of sustainability in the fisheries sector as a new European standard allows small fishing companies to perform self-assessment of the sustainability of their catches. The standard can help companies in documenting environmental, social and economic sustainability, and give estimates of the emission of CO2 per kg caught fish.

The new standard is the result of the European project “WhiteFish”, which was financed by the EU through the 7th Framework Programme for Research. The project was designed to be of benefit for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and for SME industry associations. Matís was a partner in the project along with Nofima and many other participants, such as Fisheries Iceland, Wageningen University, SIK, Federation of Icelandic fish processing plants, The Norwegian fishermen's sales organization, KRAV Ekonomisk förening, Grimsby Fish Merchants Association (GRMA), Sæmark Seafood Ltd., Hermes AS, Feldt's Fisk & Skjaldur AB and Atlantic Fresh Ltd. A full list of partners can be seen at the Matís' project website.
